Cross Cultural Music Exchange

15 02 2009

I just attended one of the TI:ME conference lectures on using video conferencing to teach music.  It was presented by Patricia Riley, a professor of music education at University of Vermont.  When I heard where she was from I started thinking of an article I read a couple of years ago on the Vermont Midi Project.  It was established to have students post their midi compositions in order to get professors and students assessment of their work.  It turns out Patricia is on the board of the midi project and is now exploring new ways to teach students in different parts of the world.  Her presentation focused on a video she made of her students connecting with a elementary classroom in Mexico.  Very interesting work that really hints at the future possibilites.

I was lucky enough to have a follow up conversation and am now quite excited about the possibilities of working with her in an exchange of musical ideas with the music department at Yokohama International School.
